One style of interior decorating that is starting to become increasingly popular is a Mediterranean style of decor. This style borrows heavily from homes in Greece, Spain, and Italy. Tuscany in particular has some beautiful homes whose style interior designers are always trying to imitate. Some decorating books refer to a Mediterranean style of decorating as Spanish Modern.

Don’t Be Afraid

Creating a Mediterranean feeling to your home isn’t difficult; it just takes a little time, a lot of creativity and a willingness to experiment. The important thing to remember when you are changing your homes decorating is that, for the most part, nothing is permanent. If you truly don’t think you can live with something you can always start all over again.

What s Your Style?

Believe it or not, the Mediterranean style of home decorating can be broke into two separate categories. Some people prefer a casual style, while others prefer a formal feeling.

Prepare to Fall in Love with Metal

It would be nearly impossible to create a Mediterranean atmosphere in your home without the liberal use of metal. The types of metal commonly used in decorating vary. Some people are drawn to use furniture and home accessories that are made out of either hammered copper or hammered pewter. The hammering gives the metal an aged feel. The battered metal is typically favored by people who prefer a more classic style of decorating. If you are someone who leans towards a contemporary look, you will still want to look at items made out of copper and pewter but stick to smooth, glossy items. Another type of metal that is well suited for both styles of Mediterranean decorating is wrought iron. Items constructed out of wrought iron usually make very elegant accent pieces.

Bring on the Light

Light is a very important part of Mediterranean decorating. Without the light, the style can be a bit overwhelming instead of breathtakingly beautiful. One of the best ways to make a room appear to be full of light is by hanging lots of mirrors. The more decorative the mirror is, the better. To help bring more light into the home, you might consider hanging light weight, pale colored, gauzy curtains on the windows.

Liberal Use of Rugs

In a traditionally Mediterranean home, the floors are often designed out of Mosaic tiles. While these tiles are striking to look at, they can be cold, especially if you live in a cold environment. One way to still capture a traditional Mediterranean feel and not get cold feet is with the liberal use of area rugs. The kind of area rug that is best suited to this particular style of interior decorating is called the Flokati rug. Flokati area rugs first appeared in Greece. Good quality Flokati rug are made out of wool and when you step on one it feels like it is hugging your feet. Nothing feels as good against bare skin as a good quality flokati rug.

Traditionally the Flokati rug is a creamy white color, but today it is possible to find it in a wide variety of colors that will compliment any Mediterranean themed home.

The biggest thing while redecorating your house is to have fun.
